International Military Tribunal For The Far East Charter: January 19, 1946
January 19 is the day when the “International Military Tribunal For The Far East Charter” ordinance was announced.
On this day in 1946, Marshal MacArthur, Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, promulgated an ordinance of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East.
Legally, it is based on Section 10 of the Potsdam Declaration below.
“Japan is not enslaved, but those who commit war crimes against other countries should be punished. The Government of Japan should revive democracy and respect speech, religion, freedom of thought, and basic human rights.”
The Potsdam Declaration is a 13-item declaration issued by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, the President of the United States, and the President of China to the Empire of Japan on July 26, 1945.
